Overview

Zimbabwe's larger listed sugar company

Hippo Valley Estates is the larger of Zimbabwe's two listed sugar companies, trading on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange under the ticker HIPPO. The estate sits on the Runde River near Chiredzi, in the south-eastern Lowveld, and produces around half of the country's sugar.

History

Hippo Valley was founded in 1956 as a citrus estate, with the first sugarcane planted in 1959. Canned Hippo Valley fruit was exported across southern Africa through the 1970s, until a global crash in the citrus market in 1975 drove a full pivot to irrigated sugarcane.

Parts of the Mkwasine supply area were affected by land reform in 2004. In 2006 Tongaat Hulett's subsidiary Triangle Sugar acquired Anglo American's 50.35% stake for US$36 million. Vitamin A fortification was installed in 2017, and the company marked its 70th anniversary in 2026.

Operations

The estate farms about 12,000 hectares of estate cane, supplemented by outgrowers, and has a sugar capacity of around 300,000 tonnes from roughly 2.4 million tonnes of cane. Bagasse cogeneration exports surplus power to the national grid. Secondary operations include cattle ranching, game reserves and citrus, and the Chiredzi Township (Private) Limited subsidiary provides water services.

Products and brands

Hippo Valley produces raw and brown sugar, marketed under the Huletts SunSweet brand, and runs sugar packaging operations.

Ownership

Triangle Limited, a Tongaat Hulett subsidiary, holds 50.32% of Hippo Valley Estates. Tate and Lyle holds approximately 10%, with the remainder a free float on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange.

Financial performance

In the financial year ended 31 March 2026, Hippo Valley sold 234,975 tonnes of sugar, representing 49.8% of total industry sugar sales. Revenue rose 15% to US$221 million, operating profit climbed 337% to US$34 million, and profit for the year rose 79% to US$24 million. The board declared a dividend of US1.50 cents per share.
