The Zimbabwe Sugar Association and ZSAES
The Zimbabwe Sugar Association (ZSA) is the industry body that brings together Zimbabwe's sugar millers, refiners and cane growers. It coordinates industry positions on trade, pricing, fortification and policy, and funds the Zimbabwe Sugar Association Experiment Station (ZSAES), the industry's research arm based in the Lowveld, which has served the sector for over 50 years.
What the Zimbabwe Sugar Association does
The Zimbabwe Sugar Association is the industry's coordinating body. Its members include Tongaat Hulett Zimbabwe, which owns the Triangle and Hippo Valley mills, the refiner StarAfrica Corporation, and private cane growers. The association represents the industry to government on import duties, the sugar tax, Vitamin A fortification, and the division of proceeds between millers and growers, and it issues industry statements, for example on supply assurance during drought years.
ZSAES: the research arm
The Zimbabwe Sugar Association Experiment Station is wholly owned by the association and funded collectively by its members. Based in the Lowveld, its staff include plant breeders, agronomists, entomologists, pathologists and agricultural engineers. Its research spans variety breeding and release, pest and disease management including the yellow sugarcane aphid, crop nutrition, irrigation and water-use efficiency, mechanisation, and climate resilience and drought tolerance. Its work is published at zsaes.org.zw.
Cane varieties
Fourteen cane varieties are officially available to growers, and a release programme is introducing 19 new high-yield, disease-resistant, high-sucrose varieties bred for irrigated conditions and mounting climate pressures.
Why it matters
The research pipeline underpins the industry's yields. Estate yields of around 100 tonnes per hectare, and the 2035 target of lifting the industry-wide average to 110 tonnes per hectare, depend on the varieties and agronomy that ZSAES develops. The conditions behind those yields are covered on the sugarcane growing page, and the national figures on the production statistics page.
