Overview

One of Zimbabwe's two sugar mills

Triangle is one of only two sugar mills in Zimbabwe, together with Hippo Valley Estates, and accounts for roughly half of national milling capacity. It lies in the Chiredzi District of Masvingo Province, in the warm, irrigated Lowveld that produces all of the country's cane.

History

Murray MacDougall founded Triangle in 1919 as a cattle ranch. A severe post-war recession pushed the venture towards crops in the late 1920s, and the first 18 hectares of irrigated sugarcane were planted in 1934. Zimbabwe's first sugar mill opened at Triangle on 11 September 1939.

The early years were difficult, and the government took over operations in 1944. The South African company Natal Syndicate bought Triangle in 1954, before Guy Hulett's consortium acquired it in 1957, beginning the Tongaat Hulett association with Zimbabwe's sugar sector. Major irrigation and water storage expansion followed through the 1960s.

Operations

Triangle farms roughly 14,000 hectares of estate cane and draws further supply from outgrowers. The mill has a crushing capacity of about 2.5 million tonnes of cane a year and a sugar capacity of over 300,000 tonnes. Bagasse cogeneration makes the mill largely energy self-sufficient during the crushing season.

An ethanol distillery attached to the factory produces up to 30 million litres of industrial-grade rectified spirit a year from molasses, sold mainly into regional markets. For the 2026 season the industry introduced the Cane Logistics and Orchestration Platform to coordinate harvesting with mill capacity, covered in our milling season report.

Products and brands

Triangle produces raw and brown sugar, marketed by Tongaat Hulett under the Huletts SunSweet brand, alongside industrial ethanol.

Ownership

Triangle Limited is wholly owned by Tongaat Hulett Limited, and in turn holds a 50.32% controlling stake in Hippo Valley Estates.

Community and employment

Triangle launched Project Kilimanjaro in November 2019, developing 4,000 hectares for 200 indigenous farmers and creating around 2,000 jobs. The estate forms part of the industry's 14,700-plus workforce and provides schools, clinics and housing for its community.
